The Give a Damn Weekly: Edition #5 : The Side Hustle Trap (And How to Escape It)

Aug 12
5 min read

Subject Line: You're Not a Bad Cleaner. You're Just Missing Systems.

Kitchen Table Conversation

Picture this: It’s 10:30 PM on a Tuesday. The house is quiet, but your brain is racing a million miles an hour. Your kitchen table is completely buried under a mountain of paper invoices, sticky notes covered in phone numbers, and a half-empty mug of coffee that went cold three hours ago.

You’ve worked sixty hours this week: scrubbing floors, answering client texts while driving, and trying to figure out why your bank account balance doesn't reflect the sweat you just put in. You're running on fumes, staring at the ceiling, wondering if this is what owning a business is supposed to feel like.

Let me be straight with you: think of your business like a car. You can floor the gas pedal all day long, gripping the steering wheel until your knuckles turn white. But if the check engine light’s been on for six months and you haven't bothered to check under the hood, you’re not going anywhere fast. You’re just burning fuel, spinning your wheels, and heading straight for burnout.

The Dirty Truth

Here’s a hard pill to swallow: Busy doesn’t mean profitable. And exhausted doesn’t mean successful.

Hustle culture loves to lie to us. It tells us that if we aren’t working ourselves into the ground every single day, we’re failing. But let's look at the reality on the ground across Ontario towns.

I know two cleaners in the exact same region. Same town, same type of houses, same basic cleaning supplies. Cleaner A charges $160 per house, rushes through four jobs a day, works 60 hours a week, and has zero dollars left in savings at month-end. Cleaner B charges $260 per house, does two quality homes a day, has structured systems for client onboarding, and actually pays herself a steady paycheck.

The difference isn't that Cleaner B scrubs toilets better or has magical cleaning powers. The difference is confidence and structure. Cleaner A is trapped in the side hustle cycle. Cleaner B is running a real, sustainable business.

Give a Damn Spotlight

This week, I want to shine a light on someone who refused to stay stuck in the grind: Tianna Carscadden from Simcoe County Clean Team.

If you caught our recent chat on navigating WSIB and building a real enterprise in Simcoe County, you know Tianna isn’t playing small. She didn't get to where she is by cutting corners, undercutting local competitors, or burning herself out seven days a week.

She built a real team with rock-solid systems, crystal-clear service standards, and a deep sense of community responsibility. Tianna proves what happens when you decide that your people, your mental health, and your pricing actually matter. She didn't just build a cleaning job for herself: she built an empire that respects her time and her team. That’s what giving a damn looks like in action.

This Week’s BEST Lesson

Let’s talk about the B in our BUILD framework. If you want to escape the side hustle trap, you have to know your numbers. Stop guessing.

Here are the 3 Numbers that change everything in a cleaning business:

  1. Labor Cost Percentage: Aim for 45–55%. If you're spending more than this on labor (including your own pay if you're working the field), your margins are choking.

  2. Gross Margin Per Job: Aim for 50–65%. This is what's left after direct job costs (supplies, direct labor).

  3. Net Profit Margin: Aim for 15–30%. This is what actually stays in the business to fund your growth, taxes, and peace of mind.

Your mini-challenge for this week: Pick one number. Just one. Calculate it. Write it down on a sticky note. Don't panic and don't try to fix it yet. Just look at it with open eyes. Awareness is step zero.

Tool We Love

Let’s be honest: staring at spreadsheets at 11 PM makes anyone want to throw their laptop out the window. That’s why inside the BeyondPro Network, our members rave about the built-in pricing formula calculator.

It takes the guesswork out of quotes entirely. One of our members recently told me it saved her three hours in a single week because she stopped second-guessing every single residential cleaning estimate she sent out. No complicated formulas, no late-night math, just accurate, profitable pricing in seconds.

And if your systems are such a mess you don’t even know where to start, the Reset Guide is a good place to begin. Sometimes you don't need more pressure. You need a clean reset and a simple next step.

Give a Damn Challenge

This week, I want you to do one uncomfortable thing. Take a deep breath, and open your business bank account.

Look at your total revenue for the last 30 days. Then, look at your total expenses. Subtract the expenses from the revenue.

Whatever number is left at the bottom? That is your net profit.

If it’s sitting below 15%, you have a problem. But here’s the good news: you can’t fix what you won't measure. Looking at the hard numbers isn't punishment: it's your map out of the trap.

Straight Talk Quote

"You can’t scale chaos. You can only contain it. And containing it is exhausting. Build systems instead."

What’s Happening at BeyondPro

Things have been moving fast around here! Our brand-new Give a Damn Pricing Guide is officially being finalized. It’s a comprehensive, no-BS breakdown of what cleaning pros across Ontario are actually charging right now in 2026.

The BeyondPro Network community feed has been buzzing with incredible pricing conversations, and members are finally starting to see real profit growth. Plus, we’ve just added fresh SOP templates and operational checklists to the Vault this week to help you standardize your cleanings without losing your sanity. If you’ve been meaning to stop trying to build this thing alone, you can check out BeyondPro First 100 and join the community there.

And for the purpose-driven folks reading this — the ones who know this industry deserves better and want to help move it forward — we’ve also got the Founder’s Partnership Program growing in the background. That piece matters too. Real change takes people who are willing to give a damn for real.

If you want more of the straight talk conversations, you can also listen in on YouTube or over on Spotify.

BONUS: The Give a Damn Score

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of your week is actually spent working ON your business versus drowning IN your business?

(1 = I'm completely buried in the daily grind; 10 = I have systems running things smoothly so I can focus on growth and rest).

Drop your number in the community comments or reply to us directly: no judgment here, we've all been at a 1 at some point.
